Celebrate A Bay Bird’s Amazing Backstory

Morecambe Bay Partnership has named its second ‘Bird of the Month’ star species, from amongst the many waders and wildfowl calling the Bay their home when over-wintering, or staying all year round.

The ‘Bird of the Month’ for February is the Little Egret – an elegant and striking species with an amazing backstory, which actually brought about the formation of the RSPB bird protection charity back in 1889.

Oystercatcher Becomes Morecambe Bay’s First ‘Bird of the Month’

Morecambe Bay Partnership is encouraging us all to become enthralled by the amazing wading birds and wildfowl over-wintering around the Bay, by creating a ‘Bird of the Month’ initiative and encouraging an ongoing ‘Big Bay Bird Watch’.

The bird in the limelight for January 2018 is the instantly recognisable oystercatcher – an easy spot for anyone spending a little time round the Bay’s shoreline either side of high tide, whether they have binoculars, or just keep their eyes peeled.

Natural Ambassadors for the Bay's Birds – volunteers needed for Walney Island

Morecambe Bay Partnership is seeking volunteers to help inform and inspire people about the thousands of waders and wildfowl that use Morecambe Bay as a vital stop-off during the autumn and winter months.  

A day workshop on Saturday 20th January will tell people about the Natural Ambassadors project, the Bay's fantastic birds, and how they can help us to inspire and enthuse people who use the Bay.
