Latest updates on clearing the Bay's beaches, pathways and cycleways of plastic waste.

Wednesday 24 February 2021

Here’s a monthly update on our new “Clear the Bay” campaign to rid plastic from Morecambe Bay's shores.  Lockdown number 3 has been continuing to halt our beach care events, but our lockdown litter picks have had some good coverage, and we’ve made some new friends along the way.

The COVID-19 crisis has once again highlighted the benefit of spending time outdoors on our mental and physical health. Lockdown litter picks are a great way of improving your mood, and it’s a fantastic way of giving back to your local community - and wildlife.  After an interview on BBC Radio Lancashire earlier this month, we had some community litter hero’s get in touch and tell us about how they have been clearing their local area during lockdown. We are developing a map of all the litter picks that are happening across the Morecambe Bay area, so we can track what’s happening where, and spot any gaps.

If you want to share your local litter pick with us, then please do get in touch!

We have a new logo for the campaign that you will spot on our social media, and we’ve worked with the LOVEmyBEACH team to develop a leaflet on spotting coastal pollution.  You can download this here.

Running litter pick total - from Feb 2021:

  • Litter collected:  26kg
  • Area covered: 38km

You may remember our all singing, all dancing campaign, back In Autumn 2020, to win votes, amongst international competition, for our new campaign to rid plastic from Morecambe Bay's shores.

Thanks to you, our incredible supporters, the only UK-based project to be shortlisted in the “marine” category of the European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA) annual funding awards, 'Clear the Bay by Day', secured over 8000 public votes and won the EOCA members’ vote.

We're now seeking to mobilise a growing army of volunteers to rid Morecambe Bay’s beaches, footpaths and cycleways of plastic waste and the pandemic of discarded masks and PPE.

The project kicks off this month (yes, right in the middle of lockdown #3, perfect timing!), and we'll update you each month on the work that has been carried out right here!

There will be ways that you can get involved and hands on as well (in due course...), so be sure to come back and read each month’s instalment.

Unfortunately, lockdown has brought a halt to any other grand plans we have had for getting our beach care events running again. We have made the decision to prioritise the safety of our volunteers and communities and hold off running any beach clean events for a while.

Instead, lets focus on 'lockdown litter picks' - can you carry one out whilst out on your daily exercise walk? Spending time outdoors during lockdown is great for improving your mood, and it’s a fantastic way of giving back to your local community - and wildlife! Do send in any pictures of your lockdown litter picks to us, we would love to see them!

If you are out and about and spot any particular “grot spots” in your local area, please let us know.  We may be able to plan a litter pick there in the future.

We have also been developing resources for people and businesses to help them avoid single use plastic, as well as creating lessons for school classes.

Running litter pick total - from January 2021:

  • Litter collected: 5.5 kg
  • Area covered: 5km
